PL: Przez całe stulecia Utopki lub Utopce tak naprawdę służyły jako straszak na nieposłuszne dzieci (ja byłam grzeczna). Zakaz chodzenia nad wodę był znacznie skuteczniejszy, gdy w umyśle małego łobuza zasiano wizję niebezpiecznego demona rządzącego wodami. Mój Tato i Dziadkowie ostrzegali mnie przed Topielcem: „Nie łaż blisko wody, bo Cię Topielec wciągnie”.

Wyobrażenia tego demona są rożne w zależności od regionu. Wspólne natomiast są pewne zachowania – Utopce lubią podmokłe tereny oraz znane są z tego, że porywają i topią ludzi. Za przystojne to one również nie były, a wspólnym mianownikiem dla wyglądu były: błona między palcami oraz duże, wyłupiaste oczy… i nie o Crazy Frog tu chodzi 🙂

GB: For centuries, “Utopki” or “Utopce” (Water Sprites) were used as a scare tactic for disobedient children (not me – I was well-behaved 😇).
The ban on going near the water was far more effective when a vivid image of a dangerous water demon was planted in a child’s mind.
My Dad and Grandparents used to warn me: “Don’t go near the water, or the Drowned Spirit will pull you in!”

Descriptions of this creature vary depending on the region, but certain behaviors are always the same – Utopce love marshy, wet areas and are notorious for drowning and kidnapping people.
They weren’t exactly good-looking either. Common traits included webbed fingers and toes, and bulging, frog-like eyes… and no, we’re not talking about Crazy Frog here! 🐸
